I find it so important to have a healthy skin care routine. Why? Because your face is the first thing a person looks at (or should be anyways LOL), and I want my skin to be GLOWING. I want healthy, natural looking skin. I have recently felt like I have my shit together, because I have nailed my skincare routine to a T. So let’s get into the secrets you will want to know all about for a beautiful face.
Throughout adolescents, I struggled with bad skin. I remember being told that it was just the phase of life and that genetics determine your skin’s destiny.
Both of these statements are somewhat true, but don’t worry if you weren’t blessed with the most amazing genes, because I wasn’t either! For years I just assumed I had to just deal with it. I promise you, it does not have to be like that.
If you want healthy skin you will have to put in the work. But I promise you, it IS possible! So let’s talk about all the secrets you need to know about to get your healthy skin care routine perfected and achieve that glow you need and deserve.
This post is all about how to achieve a healthy skin care routine for the most beautiful face ever.
Healthy Skin Care
healthy skin diet
As I mentioned above, I had shitty skin growing up. I was the girl that had a face and back full of acne. It was absolutely horrible. If an you had a similar experience growing up, I feel you. I remember listening to all the other girls complain about the tiny little nonexistent white head on their chin.
What I really learned during this time in my life, was healthy skin care starts from within. You can have the best cleanser along with the best facials, but it doesn’t mean shit if you don’t have a clean diet. Now I honestly hate the word “diet.” So let’s be clear. This is not some keto diet shit or Jenny Craig or starving ourselves diet. This is simply evaluating what foods we are allowing into our body and making simple adjustments.
Any time I have ever tried to drastically switch up my foods it never works. Any time I have drastically changed anything in my life it never works. So be sure to take this part gently and realize we are not going to go all healthy over night. But little changes to the foods you consume will make such a difference.
If you look online, they talk about specific foods to incorporate into your diet to clear up your skin. Now, I don’t honestly know if broccoli and tomatoes added to your diet will give you glowing skin. Maybe? I am not going to give you a grocery list of specific items you should be adding to your meals. Instead, I am going to talk more in a general sense as to the foods and food groups you should really be focusing on.
bye sugar
Sis, I know you love the latte with two pumps of vanilla and 5 pumps pumpkin, but it needs to become a thing of your past. Sugar (fake, processed sugar) is the enemy. If it is not coming from the ground or a tree, skip it. Now I am not enforcing to skip out on coffee because we are hot moms and we need caffeine. I get it. Those holiday crafted Starbucks drinks are just a marketing scam! They are doing nothing for you and definitely won’t doing anything for your skin. Do yourself a favor and swap for the americano. You’ll not only have healthy, glowing skin but also be more caffeinated 😉
hello plants
Fruits and vegetables need to be added to your daily foods for a healthy skin care look. From grapes to peppers, you will be receiving so many benefits. Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamins that help with anti aging, collagen boost, and just the overall look and feel of your skin. The richer and more vibrant of color in the plant, typically the better. Not only do fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins to make your skin beautiful, but many of these plants will aid in hydration which is another bonus.
hydrate
I feel like I talk about the importance of drinking water in almost all of my posts, but it is SO important ESPECIALLY when it comes to your skin. Hydration from the inside will truly transform to your skin’s texture and overall health. Get yourself a cute new water bottle to carry around and hydrate yourself!
healthy fats
Incorporating healthy fats such as avocados and nuts is also part of this healthy skin diet. Healthy fats will help your skin from looking dull and weak and transform it to looking more young, fresh and plump. Healthy fats have many benefits to your overall health, so this should just be an added food that is on your grocery list no matter what.
skin care tips at home
If you live in a dry climate or live in an environment that gets very cold weather, I highly suggest you purchase a humidifier. Ever since having Owen, I realized how dry all our of skin gets in the winter. I purchased a mini humidifier for his room and a larger one for our living space. It quite honestly has made such a difference for all of our skin. I don’t know about you, but in the winter my skin gets so tight. Like I go to smile or sneeze and my forehead feels like it just cracked in half. Getting yourself a humidifier will be life changing for your healthy skin care. Below I will have both humidifiers linked!
Another little change you can do at home is swap out your cotton pillow cases for satin ones. When I first heard of this tip, I wasn’t quite sure how that could make an impact on my skin, but you guys it does. Ever since I started using satin pillow cases, my skin gets way less of those tiny little annoying pimples. I am not even exactly sure what the exact benefits they say are with satin pillows, I just know my skin randomly started clearing up.
Also, while we are on the topic of pillow cases, MAKE SURE TO REGUARLY WASH YOUR PILLOW CASES!!! Actually, wash it all. Your pillow cases, bedding, towels, all of it. It is so disgusting to me to hear that people don’t regularly wash their bedding. So much bacteria builds up on your bedding. Even if you aren’t a super sweaty sleeper, you are leaving so much unseen bacteria all over the place. Pillow cases I would say should be changed and washed every week and all the other bedding like two times a month.
Ever since I have been living on my own, I have been in love with making my home smell nice. Whether that be with candles, Febreze plugins, or those little canisters with the oil and sticks coming out that are so overly priced. Anyways, I have always loved it all. I recently have done some research and found out that shit is actually horrible for you. Bad for your skin, bad for your lungs, and just bad for your overall health. The oils (like those that come from outlet plugins) leave a residue on your lungs that actually makes it more hazardous to your health than compared to smoking. Disgusting right? I still have candles, because they make me happy and really make my space feel clean. But I got rid of my wall plugins ASAP, and I really suggest you do the same.
If you are looking for a healthier option to a fresh smelling room, I would suggest for you to buy an essential oil diffuser! I had one in the past, but it was not cute and I just never used it. Recently, I found this super cute one off Amazon! It honestly looks so boujee but was super inexpensive.
products you need for healthy, glowing skin
Because I had horrible skin in high school, I have learned a thing or two about skincare. From what I have learned is you truly don’t need to spend a fortune on products. If you have the money and you just want the boujee brands, that’s on you girl. Do as you please. But if you are on a hot girl budget, don’t feel discouraged that you are not going to be able to achieve a glowing face because you don’t have the $$.
I am going to list below some healthy skin care products I SWEAR by. These products have been my holy grail, during through all the ruts of the hormonal skin in pregnancy, postpartum and weaning phases.
cleanser
When I first found out I was pregnant, I had to switch to a cleanser that didn’t have all the gross ingredients in it. One of the first products that was recommended to me was the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. I made the switch and haven’t gone back. This cleanser has been perfect for my summer oily skin, dry cracked up winter skin AND my hormonal acne prone skin. I have nothing but all positive things to write about this cleanser. It is incredibly inexpensive and contains clean ingredients.
exfoliants
To be clear, I do not exfoliate my face every day, and you really shouldn’t. I personally only use a facial exfoliator about 2 times a week. Anything more than that would cause my face to honestly look super flat and dry. Below, I will have listed my favorite inexpensive and little more pricier exfoliator. Both of these products leave my face feeling super clean and aren’t too harsh on my skin.
serums
I use two types of serums, one for my morning skincare routine and one for the night. They are both from the line The Ordinary. I honestly love this line because not only are their products actually amazing, but they are SO inexpensive. And that is exactly what I was explaining earlier! Unless you are purposely trying to blow your money, healthy skin care is not unattainable because you don’t have the cash to splurge. The Ordinary really enforces that with their affordable, yet amazing products.
During the day time, I use The Ordinary Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil. This product is great if you are looking for a serum with anti-aging benefits and it also hydrates the F out of your skin. I love using this product, especially if I am going to be applying makeup, because it makes my skin look plump and incredibly flawless.
For night time, I use their retinoid. Retinoids or retinols can be harsh on your skin. So if you are new to the retinoid game, I really suggest only doing this like every other night- and just a tiny amount. For me personally, I noticed no issues and have been able to use this product every night (right before my moisturizer).
Disclaimer: Retinols and retinoids should all be avoided if you are pregnant.
moisturizers
If you follow me on Instagram or ever read any of my beauty posts in the past, you would know I am madly in love with the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream. I will link the post here so you can go read all up on your new favorite night cream. But to sum it up, if you are looking for plump, fresh skin- then this will be your new night cream gal. She is a little more pricy, but I wouldn’t be talking her all up if she wasn’t worth the splurge. I promise this night cream will not let you down.
As for a day cream, I really don’t think you have to splurge on the price. This is one part of my skincare routine, I really like to try different brands. The main things I look for are: clean ingredients, hyaluronic acid (looks great with makeup), and works with all skin types. Recently, I purchased the Skinfix Barrier+ from Sephora, and I think it’s doing wonders for my dry skin during this time of the year. My makeup also looks great on top.
sunscreen
I don’t care if you are getting your protection from a moisturizer, foundation or just actual sunscreen, but you guys it is so important to protect your skin. Whether it’s May or October, if you are outside you need something with SPF in it. It is so important to protect our skin. 50 year old you will be thanking your ass, I promise 😉
I hope you guys found this post to be extremely helpful when it comes to your new skincare routine for glowing skin. You are going to love it and would love to hear what you do for your hot, clean girl skin care routine. I hope you have the best day! xxx
