You’ve been chasing your toddler around all day, and the second you have free time you just wanna chill on the couch? Or maybe you have been working your ASS off in the office this week and just need to breathe. Unfortunately, we often push our skin care to the bottom of the list (or maybe don’t even do it at all). We have all been there. I definitely have my moments where I’m like no it’s fine, I don’t need to wash my face tonight. I then wake up the next morning with a face full of zits and am automatically sad. We do need to take care of our skin but sometimes life doesn’t allow us much time. AND SIS, that is why we need a fast and effective night skin care routine.
Having a night skin care routine not only sets you up for an amazing nights rest, but I also believe it sets up for a successful morning. For me personally, when I skip a night skin care sesh, I wake up feeling so gross. My skin feels dry and dirty. It just sets a bad tone for my morning, right off the bat. So if you are needing a little extra boost of motivation to wash your face, think of how much cleaner and happier you will feel, in the morning.
Some people believe in a 10 step skin care routine. For me, I know I will not be sticking to a routine that takes me more than five minutes. I also know, I will not be even TRYING a routine that occupies that much of my bank money.
I will be talking about your new favorite P.M. skincare regimen (for all skin types) AND how to get this done in less than five minutes. Coming from a girl who had a face full of acne all throughout high school, I have learned a thing or two. I am definitely no dermatologist, but I have tried SO many products. I have also tried SO many routines. AND, I have had all skin types throughout my life.
This post is all about the quick and effective night skin care routine you have truly been dreaming of.
Night Skin Care Routine
simple night skin care routine
This simple routine is for all the combination girlies. Or maybe your skin has been looking amazing lately, and you want to keep it that way. I really feel I have mastered this routine because ever since having Owen, I have gotten extremely lazy. Like I said earlier, I needed a routine that was fast but effective. And if it wasn’t, I knew I wouldn’t stick to it. So let’s get into this incredibly simple routine.
face wash
Whether you wore makeup today or not, we are going to find a face wash that can do it both: remove makeup and wash your face. I have found in the past, even the most simple micellar water strips my face and leaves it incredibly dry. So instead, I highly suggest finding a face wash that can do it both for you.
When it comes to a face wash, I don’t believe I need to spend tons of money on this product. Over the years, I have tried so many different face washes. From what I can tell, they all work the same. If my skin is having dry over oily skin, sure I may pick a different product. But when it comes down to it, you do not need to be throwing your wallet at a face wash.
Currently, I am using the hydrating facial cleanser by CeraVe. It contains hyaluronic acid (which we all know and love) and ceramides. I have never once felt my skin get too dry from using this product. My skin truly feels clean and refreshed after using. Another wash that I have been loving is Youth To The People’s. It contains all the clean ingredients you will be loving. It is another great basic face wash that does an amazing job of taking my makeup off and cleaning my face.
Under eyes need a lift? I got you <3
Toner
When my face is in combo mode or on a better day, I like to use a basic toner. I feel like anytime I skip this step, because I don’t think it’s necessary, my skin always starts to go south. When using my toner I literally just pour it over my fingers and apply. You definitely can use cotton balls or pads, I just feel like so much the product gets wasted and soaks right up. (i also get a gross cotton ball residue on my face) So literally, just pour it on your finger tips, apply and let it dry for a minute. The one I have been using is from Peach & Lily. But honestly the drugstore ones work just as fine. I do like to make sure I pick one that is alcohol-free and free of ingredients that are going to dry out my skin.
night cream
In this last step, I use my night cream. I will say for most skin care products, price does not matter. When it comes to a night cream, this is the one area that I go against that. You want to make sure and find a super thick (but non-greasy) cream. The cream needs to help lock in moisture but also keep your skin hydrated all night. You know you have found the right night cream when you wake up in the morning, and your skin is looking plump, hydrated and glowing.
night skin care routine for oily skin
So maybe you just had a baby, so naturally your skin is out of control. Or maybe, it is summer time and your skin’s moisture barrier just cannot calm down. What most people don’t know is- how our skin is in the morning actually has a huge affect from how we treated it the night before. This is why, implementing a night skin care routine is so crucial.
Many people think, okay so my skin is oily AF so I will skip out on the night cream. Wrong. Some people also think okay, let me find the products with the harsh ingredients to completely dry out my skin. Also wrong!! If you do either of these, you are seriously just going to set your skin up for failure.
exfoliant
When my skin goes from normal to oily, I honestly don’t do too much different from my simple routine shown above. The one thing I make sure to add into my routine is an exfoliant. Again, I do not over do it. Even the exfoliators that say “daily” on them, I still only use them every few days (max).
on the spot treatment
For me, pimples come with oily skin. So I also like to add some sort of on the spot pimple cream into my routine. This- I will do both in the morning and at night. When I was pregnant, I really loved The Body Shop tea tree oil. Pimple patches are something I have been using now and have seen really good results with them.
mask
Once a week, I like to go in with a mask. When my skin is oily, I feel like this is what really helps control it. I have tried many masks and many do severely dry out my skin, or it gets incredibly irritated from it. Fun fact, if your skin burns after application of a mask (or any product) that does NOT mean it is working better. Your skin should not burn. That just means your skin hates the product basically lol. The Ordinary has a simple, inexpensive mask that has really helped improve my skin from blemishes when I am having oily skin.
night skin care routine for dry skin
I’m not sure about you guys, but when my skin is dry, I HAVE to take special care of her. I feel like when my skin is dry, it is so fragile and prone to redness, acne, and scarring. It is so important that when our skin is edging on the dry side, we catch it and start using the proper products immediately.
face wash & Toner
Some think that when their skin is dry, it is appropriate to cut down to 1 or 0 face wash sessions a day. And that is actually wrong and here is why. When our skin is dry, it needs moisture. So it is important to wash our face and then lock in the moisture with an appropriate face cream. It’s also always important to wash our face twice a day to remove all the dirt and impurities the day (or night sleep) brings to our skin.
On my driest days, I really like to use the most gentle cleanser. Seriously, just go find the most simple face wash ever, and that is the product you will want. On my dry skin days, I really enjoy this one from Clinique– but really anything labeled as “simple” or for “dry/sensitive skin” will be perfect for you.
After you wash your face, go in with your toner. Again, this should be something super simple. If it feels like you are just putting water on your face, then you found the perfect one. The toner I mentioned above from Peach & Lily is a really nice gentle formula.
Serum
So if you aren’t using a serum on your dry skin, this is me telling you to go buy a couple to try out. Using a serum is really what transforms my skin and allows it to lock in moisture. I think many of us don’t use serums because the word comes off intimidating and expensive. Which I would agree. The market is also saturated with serums so it is so hard to know which ones work, especially if you are sacrificing your bank account.
I currently use two different serums. I use a retinol (only use if you are not pregnant) and a rose hip oil. Both of these are from The Ordinary, so they are very affordable. Not only are they cheap, but they do WONDERS for your skin and complexion. My dry skin, redness and blemishes are completely taken aback when I use a serum.

night cream
Again like I said above, I am a huge advocate for splurging a little extra on your night cream. This is especially true when you’re in your dry skin era. It is so important to not just pick out any face lotion and also make sure it is labeled as a “night cream.” When a brand uses the word “cream” it typically means the formula will be thicker, which is what you want. When looking for the perfect night cream, you want it to be non-greasy. The product should also be thick enough to lock in the products you just applied- while keeping it hydrated until morning.
Thank you so much for reading!! I hope all questions and confusion were answered, and you’re all set up to have the most perfect night skincare routine! Have the best day xxx
This post was all about night skin care routine that will literally take you 5 minutes.
